Panchadhatu rings in Nepal

Rings in panchadhatu (also written panchdhatu), the five-metal alloy that has long been used in Nepali ritual work, made at our workshop in Bhaktapur and delivered across Nepal.

What panchadhatu is

Panchadhatu means “five metals”: gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron, alloyed together. Proportions differ between workshops; what doesn't change is that all five are present. Without the fifth metal, it isn't panchadhatu.

The alloy has a long history in Nepal and India in temple statues and ritual objects, and many people wear a panchadhatu ring for religious or astrological reasons. We make the rings; we don't make claims about what wearing one will do.

How our panchadhatu rings are made

Most of our panchadhatu rings are cast from a mould, then cleaned, set and finished by hand at the bench. Their listings say “casted panchadhatu”. A few are handcrafted instead, and say so. Each listing also names the stone set in the ring, such as zircon or pyrite.

Panchadhatu ring prices

Right now we list 13 panchadhatu rings, from NPR 899 to NPR 1484.

The price on each ring is the price you pay; when a discount applies, the original price is shown struck through beside it. For a ring in a design we don't list, use the custom ring order.

Colour, wear and care

  • The copper in panchadhatu gives it a warm tone that sits closer to a dull gold than to silver.
  • It darkens into a patina with wear rather than staying bright, and that is normal.
  • Wipe it dry after it gets wet.
  • Store it apart from silver jewelry so the two don't rub against each other.

Finding your ring size

When you add a ring to your cart, you type in your ring size. If you know it, enter it the way you know it, for example 7.

If you don't, take a ring that already fits the finger you want to wear it on and measure straight across the inside in millimetres, then type that measurement into the size box instead. A few tips:

  • Measure a plain ring rather than a wide band; wide bands fit more tightly.
  • Fingers are slightly larger at the end of the day and in warm weather.
  • Check the ring will still slide over your knuckle.

We confirm every order by phone before it is dispatched, so you can check the size then too.

Delivery across Nepal

We deliver all over Nepal with Nepal Can Move (NCM). Orders inside Kathmandu Valley (Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur) usually arrive within 1 to 2 business days, and orders outside the valley within 2 to 3. Every order is confirmed with you by phone before it is dispatched.

Frequently asked questions

What is panchadhatu made of?

Panchadhatu is an alloy of five metals: gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron. The proportions vary from workshop to workshop, but all five are always present.

Is it panchdhatu, panchadhatu or pancha dhatu?

All three. They are different ways of writing पञ्चधातु in English letters, which means "five metals". We use panchdhatu and panchadhatu interchangeably on this site.

How much is a panchadhatu ring at Elix?

We currently list 13 panchadhatu rings, priced from NPR 899 to NPR 1484. The prices shown already include any current discount.

Does panchadhatu change colour?

Its copper content gives it a warm tone, closer to a dull gold than to silver, and it deepens into a patina as it is worn rather than staying bright.

Are your panchadhatu rings cast or handmade?

Most are cast from a mould and then cleaned, set and finished by hand; a few are handcrafted. Each listing says which.

Can I order a panchadhatu ring in my own design?

Yes. Describe the ring, or send a sketch or photo, through the custom order form and we will contact you to talk it through.
