Sterling silver: what it is and how to care for it
- Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Fine silver on its own is too soft to hold a stone or keep a ring round; the copper is what makes it wearable.
- Silver reacts with sulphur in the air and slowly dulls. That tarnish is a surface film, not damage, and a silver polishing cloth brings the shine back.
- To slow tarnish, store it dry and away from air, for example in a small zip bag, and take it off before swimming or bathing and before putting on perfume or lotion.
